Sunday at the Market

February 7, 2010 § Leave a comment

Sunday is the day I go to the market to stock up on vegetables (and sometimes grains) for the week.  The goal is to avoid running to the store because I need something that a recipe calls for and simply make one trip to the market a week.  I pick up whatever looks good or interesting and worry about how I am going to prepare it later, when I get home.  I typically bring everything home, wash it thoroughly, and arrange it on an accessible platter like the one in the pictures so that I always know what my vegetable inventory is.

Here are the finds from yesterday’s market trip, as pictured above:

  • leeks
  • baby potatoes
  • garlic
  • red carrots
  • sun chokes (a.k.a. Jerusalem artichoke)
  • turnips
  • beets
  • onions
  • rootabaga
  • cabbage
  • Romanesco broccoli (a type of cauliflower)
  • barley
